Lake Sebago is truly beautiful in the springtime. I am writing this from the comfort of my friend Anne’s home in New Hampshire. After medical school she married a wealthy gentlemen and has now devoted herself to the life of a mother and housewife. I must say, now I find great comfort in living in a home full of chatty children, their nanny and my dear friend, I truly would not know what to do with myself if I had to stay alone in my lonely home.
March 1st I again found myself in the office of Mr. Ropes together with Mr. Berglund, Mr. Ogmore and two gentlemen I didn`t know. Both turned out to be foreigners, Mr. Adelina, a fencer from Spain struck me as a quite charming man (maybe it`s the accent) , very polite, but I was shocked when it became clear that Mr. Dexler was German! And when it was revealed that he had participated in the war, I felt like slapping him. I thought it outrageous that I was going to have to cooperate with such a man. Honestly, I was missing Mr. Fairlane at that point. However, I held my tongue.
Soon we were on are way to the small town of Andover to investigate some rather curious incidents involving strange light phenomenon and a great lizard in the towns graveyard. Really, I have heard stories about alligators at home, but in Massachusetts? As we were told that the caretaker of the cemetery was a known drunk, I suspected (hoped) the story to be result of binge drinking and nothing more. However, the students of Philips Academy had been given the blame, some thought the incidents must have been practical jokes executed by mischievous schoolboys which was quite distressing for Dean Sterns, a personal friend of Mr. Ropes. Hopefully we would be able to discover what taken place in the cemetery and also save the school’s reputation.
After a long drive with a much less talkative Mr. Ogmore than usual we arrived at Philips Academy. Dean Sterns didn`t have much to tell us that we didn’t already know, nor the police or the reporter that we also visited. That was when the reckless German thought it would be a good idea to visit the cemetery to do some investigations of our own. I objected, I was not interested in visiting the cemetery at dusk, but he obviously felt a great need to prove himself a man and insisted we go immediately.
I must say I felt rather ill when we came to the cemetery. It was like a small forest and the hideous hobo in Arkham that I`ve been trying to forget suddenly seemed to be peering at me from behind the tall dark trees. Mr. Adelina drew his sword so I decided it was safest to stay close to him. We didn’t have to go far before we saw an odd light moving among the trees. Mr. Berglund had several theories, but none of them turned out to be particularly relevant when we moved closer to the phenomenon. In the circle was some monstrous creature with tentacles and I
He`s gone on high to prepare a place
Trouble done bore me down
To prepare a place for me and you
was overcome with dread. Luckily, Mr. Berglund was there and with his help I was able to compose myself. The strange thing was that we could not quite agree what the creature was. Mr. Ogmore rambled on about a dinosaur, while Mr. Adelina and Mr. Berglund were sure they saw something that resembled a pineapple with tentacles. I was not sure what to think. Thankfully, we all agreed on that it was best to go back to the hotel. Before we retired to our rooms we had a small supper and as I could feel my anxiety build up in me I drank several glasses of wine to calm myself which ensured me a peaceful night.
The next day Mr. Berglund and I went to the local library to see if we could find anything of interest while Mr. Ogmore, Mr. Dexler and Mr. Adelina went to have a look at the caretaker’s residence. According to Mr. Ogmore, it is not illegal to enter another man’s home as long as the door is unlocked, I am not sure the police would agree with him, so I was quite happy to spend some time helping Mr. Berglund in the library. It also gave me a chance to confide to Mr. Berglund my troubles and he assured me that he would be able to help me. I am much relived as I find my condition quite crippling.
The other three gentlemen met up with us later that afternoon. Mr. Ogmore was very excited when he found a book on dinosaurs that he claimed were similar to what he had seen in the light and we were all busy trying to calm him down and apologize to the librarian for his behavior when suddenly police cars, sirens howling, drove passed the building at a furious speed. We all jumped into Dorothy and followed them. It turned out they were on their way to the cemetery and when we arrived they were sadly already dead and the light that we had seen the night before appeared to be some kind of window into another world. Mr. Ogmore, Mr. Dexler and Mr. Adelina passed through the window while I hesitated. They were studying stones placed in some strange formation when I saw an enormous beast, a dinosaur, charging towards them. It was like the beast Mr. Ogmore had shown us in the book, when I see him next time I must apologize for doubting him! I reached into the light to try to help them back but was myself sent through to the other world. Luckily Mr. Dexler had brought a machine gun and with that he managed to kill the beast (maybe I am too quick to judge people, the man saved our lives in a very heroic act. I must keep this incident in mind next time I meet a new agent). I was then able to take a closer look at the strange stone circle and it was clear to all of us that it had been made to perform a ritual of sort, most probably open the window to our world.
But the incident was not over yet. Suddenly we found ourselves thrown back through the window. Poor Mr. Adelina hit a tree and I had just finished helping him and Mr. Berglund who had tried to help us and injured himself when his gun malfunctioned, when I turned around and saw a new abomination. It was like
I’ve seen some strangers quite unknown
I’m a child of misery
I’m sometimes up and sometimes down
I’m sometimes level with the ground
However, the creatures were still on the loose and Mr. Adelina, Mr. Dexler and I ran after them until we came to another part of the cemetery were someone or something had recreated the circle we saw in the other strange world we had briefly visited. We destroyed the circle and hopefully we rid the city of the creatures.
It has come to our attention when we arrived back at the hotel that the police had taken with them Mr. Ogmore and Mr. Berglund to jail! I do not know the circumstances, but I hope and pray that the P.I.B. will come to their assistance.
And now I will try to enjoy the rest of my holiday with my friend. I have an unsettling feeling that I am followed if I am in the garden so I prefer to stay inside with the company of others. And when if I see someone in the house, at least I know that I am not alone.
O Lord, O Lord, What shall I do,
I asked God Almighty for to run me ’round O Lord,
O Lord What shall I do?
